ALBERT NAMATJIRA (1902-1959)
“The Red Walls of Glen Helen Valley, McDonnell Ranges, Central Australia”
Bears Gallery Label Verso
Provenance: This work was sold by Artarmon Galleries in the early 60s. Private Collection, Melbourne.
Glen Helen Gorge is part of some of the most beautiful areas in the McDonnell Ranges, it has been said of the area, the land where time began.
The ranges were formed over 1000 million years ago. Home of the Arante aboriginal people it’s steep with legends and stories of the dreamtime, and is an area that Namatjira painted and documented well with his paintings. The area around Glen Helen is spectacular. When approaching the first thing you see is a towering sandstone wall which changes colour during the day with dramatic effect. Namatjira with this work has captured just a moment of its grandeur. It is the beginning of an important tourist destination where the Finke River flows through the Ormiston George and the magnificent Kings Canyon on the way to the Simpson Desert.
